Chapter Ten

“It’s time.”

I don’t respond, only watch as All enters the tent, dressed still—in nothing but pants. Shivering, I wonder what those pants could possibly be made of.

No–I don’t want to know.

“Time for the feast?” I ask tonelessly.

“Don’t look so frightened, my angel,” he chides darkly, his eyes raking my form.

Nodding, I dare to look directly into his devilish features. “I’m hungry,” I admit shakily, “but I won’t eat another person.”

He tilts his head, “They taste better than you might think.”

I continue, steadfastly ignoring his words, “So please–just–kill me.”

“Kill you?” his tone is so hard, I wince as if slapped.

“Yes…I’ve given it a lot of thought, and I’d like that—if you killed me.” Sincerity shines in my eyes.

In the blink of an eye, he’s in front of me, gripping my shoulders. “I think we better get something straight, right now.” He forces my chin up. “If you–ever–attempt to leave me through death, I will go back to that little convent you came from, and kill every last person you ever cared about.”

That’s it, the damn breaks. “Why, at least tell me that much?”

He moves, kicking my legs open. “You’re mine.”

I shake my head deliriously. “Why? Why I am chosen, as you put it?”

“All in good time, Rina,” he warns.

“Please…” I beg.

He gently pulls me to my feet, twirling me around like we’re in a ballroom, not some hut in the middle of nowhere. “Shhh,” he whispers, his mouth instantly at my neck. “Haven’t you figured it out, yet? You’re to be my queen, Rina.”

“I don’t want to be yours, or your queen,” I tell him brazenly.

He smiles, and I notice something for the first time—his teeth are wicked sharp. “You are mine, Rina, there’s no escape.”

We’ll see about that. “Can we just get on with it then?”

He laughs wickedly, his eyes flashing, “You look beautiful tonight, my angel.”

“Who did this belong to?” Suddenly I’m glancing down at myself, at the nightgown the old woman had given me.

“Jeffrey found it.” All shrugs, but even that small movement is menacing.

Oh God, so it probably belonged to some innocent woman.

“Who is he really?” I ask. “He’s the only other person here who speaks fluent English.”

He loses his smile, “So, you want to know where this all began, do you?”

With a quick nod, “Yes!”

“I found him first, a traveler through these lands,” he mocks in dark tones. “He was perfect for my mission.”

“Your mission?”

“To cure the world,” he hisses, “from their sickness.”

I recoil. “What sickness?”

“No matter how much I tell you, you’ll never piece together the ending, Rina.” His tone is soft yet sneering.

He’s too smart, too quick. He knows what I’m up to, that I only want to find answers so I can escape. “Please promise me there’ll be no more killing,” I change the subject for a much more important one. “Please!”

“I can only make one promise.”

I swallow hard, “Which is?”

“When I take you, when I spill your virgin blood, I will finally be set free,” he says this with relish. “I will be free to enter the world once again.
